Interview: Nonye Toria

Nonye Toria is an Edmonton-based artist and humanitarian whose work fuses Afrobeats, pop, and rock with a deep-rooted belief in music as a tool for healing and connection. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, and descended from royal lineage in Ubuluku, Delta State, she moved to England at age 13, where her creative journey truly began.

Nonye’s early experiences include performing in the Sarafina! musical at St. Dominic’s Primary School and joining a Motown band while studying at East Berkshire College in Langley. In 2008, she performed the musical number “Day by Day” from Godspell for Queen Elizabeth II—a standout moment that highlighted her powerful voice and stage presence. That same year, she appeared in episodes of the iconic British television series EastEnders, continuing to build her performance repertoire across music and acting.

In 2011, Nonye returned to Nigeria to reconnect with her roots and bring her creativity to new platforms. She worked in Liberia with IEDA Relief (International Emergency Development Agency) and later partnered with Dayo Israel and the GLEEHD Foundation to develop youth empowerment programs for the Nigerian government, in collaboration with the United Nations.

With a mission grounded in love, unity, and spiritual intention, Nonye Toria’s music and advocacy are one and the same—bold, healing, and unapologetically her.
