Interview: Miles Jenson
Photography by Tommy Petroni
Miles Jenson is a Los Angeles-based multi-genre musician who blends soul, chamber pop, and cinematic textures in his work. His most recent EP, Sunshine Goldmine, produced by Grammy award-winning producer King Garbage, features a lean three songs that center around discussions of classism, racism, identity, and addiction. Jenson navigated more commercial-level opportunities before deciding to return to the indie route and reclaim his artistic voice. His music has been called "jarring," "provocative," and "raw."
What inspires your music?
I tend to think a lot about the sociocultural influences that define "normal," and what it means to live outside of that tent. I've always been attracted to the spirit of defiance, and I find it meaningful to shine light on the corners of ourselves that are gruesome but universal. I'm not all doom and gloom, though, I write about love, self-exploration, and am likely in some way or another meditating on what it means to find yourself.
Who are some of your influences?
Donny Hathaway, Fiona Apple, Radiohead, Otis Redding, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, JET, Nina Simone, The Prodigy, Patrick Watson James Blake. I really kinda get it from all over.
What are some of your favorite memories from your career?
Finishing and releasing Sunshine Goldmine was so cathartic and exciting. I am so proud of it, and we were uncompromising in the vision. It is truly special to put something so raw out into the world and for it to be received and appreciated.
Which of your projects do you love the most?
I think Country Club, from Sunshine Goldmine, stands out to me because it is a biting commentary on where I grew up in Atlanta. The South, and our country in general, criminalizes the have-not's while treating the have's with compassion regarding the very same issues-addiction, poverty, etc. I find this double standard to be something that is my duty to perpetually speak out about, so it was satisfying to release.
Who are some of the collaborators who helped you create your favorite works?
Vic Dimotsis aka @kinggarbage and Bart Schoudel @bschoudel
What are you most excited to bring to your fans next?
Vic and I are currently working on my first full-length album!
What are your goals for this upcoming year?
I would like to release my album, tour, and collaborate more and more!
How can your fans and our readers best support you right now?
